ENG 090-003 Day 5

Today we went over Practice 2 that you were supposed to do for homework. We also discussed narrowing topics and writing topic sentences, worked on some exercises in Evergreen (pp. 27-31), and wrote paragraphs in groups.

For Thursday: Write three possible topic sentences using the topic you've selected for your first paragraph. (The one you selected for freewriting last Thursday.) You may change your topic at this point, but this will be your last chance to do so.

ENG 131 Week 2

Last night we discussed audience (pp. 66-96) and business correspondence (336-62). The drafts of the documents for your correspondence assignment are due next week.

Here are the guidelines:

1. Write one letter (at least two pages long) and one memo (no more than one page).
2. Do not use templates from a word processing program; format the documents yourself.
3. Each document must include at least three substantial paragraphs in the body.
4. Everything (company, situation, etc.) may be made up.

Next week, we'll be covering revising and editing.

ENG 090-004 and -006 Day 4

Each person selected one of the five topics due in class today to freewrite about. We then talked about paragraphs and topic sentences, which may appear anywhere in a paragraph (pages 21-23 in Evergreen). We also worked on Practice 2 on pages 24-26 in Evergreen.

ENG 090-003 Day 4

On Thursday, a tutor from the Writing Center came to class and told us about the services they provide. If you missed class, you can get copies of the fliers from me.

ENG 090-004 Book Left in Class

Someone left his or her copy of Evergreen with another student on Wednesday. I'll bring it to class with me on Monday.

ENG 090 Day 3

In class, we did the following:

1. Freewriting and doublelooping about why you came to Red Rocks and how your experience here has been
2. Discussion of subject, purpose, and audience for the ad on page 7 in Evergreen
3. Practice 4 (page 6 in Evergreen) in groups, to be completed next class

For next class, complete Practice 3 (pages 5 and 6 in Evergreen): “List five subjects that you might like to write about. Consider your audience and purpose: For whom are you writing? What do you want them to know about your subject? Notice how the audience an purpose will help shape your paper. For ideas, reread the boxed questions on this page [page 5].”

ENG 131 Week 1

We went over the syllabus, introduced ourselves, and discussed the following (most of Chapters 1 and 3):

1. what technical writing (communication) is
2. the characteristics of good technical writing
3. the technical writing process

Since we will be doing job-application materials in a couple of weeks, you might want to start collecting the information you'll need: job titles, responsibilities, dates for employment and education, etc.
